WordPress

Misconceptions—Let’s Clarify

If you think WordPress is just a blogging tool take a look at this fantastic article: WordPress Myths Debunked it clears up many of the misconceptions people have when they hear the term. WordPress is not just a blogging platform. Some of the biggest brand names and Fortune 500 companies are running WordPress software: Newsroom, The New Yorker,  BBC America,  Disney, Target, the list goes on.

Hosted vs. Self-Hosted Sites:

Incase you wanted a little more info about the difference between the two, read on.

What Is A Hosted Platform?

Hosted platforms are an all-in-one purchase. They provide proprietary software to build your website and the computer storage space where your site will live. In other words, it’s the software and hosting all in one. (WIX and SquareSpace are two popular hosted platforms for the typical DIYer)

It’s important to note, with a hosted website, if at any point you are unhappy with the hosting company and wish to build another site you will have to abandon your site and start from scratch elsewhere. Also, if the hosting company goes out of business, your website goes down with them.

Then there is WordPress.com not to be confused with the WordPress Software itself. One advantage to WordPress.com over its competitors, (e.g. WIX and  SquareSpace), is it isn’t going anywhere. WordPress.com is a unique all-in-one buy for the DIYer, and the WP software is Free. However, that doesn’t mean a WordPress site is free. Keep in mind, the free plans are for the typical blogger. This service is only practical for business purposes when you pay for WordPress.com hosting. We recommend the Premium or Business Plan for full functionality if you want to do-it-yourself.

  • Benefits:

When you use a hosted platform, the hosting company handles all the software updates for you, and this can contribute to a low maintenance burden. An extra benefit to a WordPress site with WP Hosting is you are not locked into a proprietary platform. It’s simple to transfer your data and set up a new site elsewhere if you decide to move to self-hosting in the future.

  • Drawbacks:

The biggest drawback to hosted platforms is the inherent restrictions on customization and functionality. In order to make their systems easy and inexpensive to use, they have to restrict what is possible. That is to say, you will have to compromise form and function. Unfortunately, you will have less control over what your finished product looks like and how it preforms overall.

  • Takeaway:

If you are going to do-it-yourself  WordPress.com is the way to go.  (We are an affiliate, which means we receive small compensation if you sign up via our link above. This helps us keep costs down for you!).

What Does It Mean to be Self-Hosted?

A developer builds a self-hosted website using software of their choosing, and then hires a hosting company to store that website. The price for self-hosting ranges. In other words, they have far fewer restrictions.

Benefits:

  • Self-hosted websites provide the ultimate in flexibility and customization. eCommerce compatibility: With WooCommerce. Install and use plugins to do just about everything to make your website easier to operate and run smoothly: JetPack is design, marketing, and security all in one place. Quick pricing for JetPack. There are fewer restrictions to the changes you can make to layout and design, and you can add any functionality you choose. If you’re unhappy with your hosting company, pick it up and move it elsewhere.

  • Drawbacks:

You are responsible for updates. However, you can easily update your WordPress site by simply clicking on the update button when available, so it’s really not as intimidating as it sounds. Backups are also up to you. Thankfully, there are many WordPress backup plugins that let you setup automatic backups. However, sometimes these things can seem a tad overwhelming.  (We offer monthly packages for web maintenance, for this reason.)

We design all of our websites using WordPress software, and you choose your own hosting company.

Hosting:

You are free to choose hosting through any company you wish. We do, however, caution against some because of their poor performance speeds and unreliable tech support. Hosting companies we recommend based on WordPress compatibility and usability, performance and AWESOME tech support:

Bluehost  We only endorse companies we know, use, and/or trust. If we wouldn’t use them we wouldn’t recommend them! We use Bluehost to host this site, in fact.

SiteGround  Another trusted company that many users choose for their reliable speeds and customer service.

(We are an affiliate of Bluehost and SiteGround, which means we receive compensation as an affiliate if you sign up for either service using the provided link. This helps us keep costs down for you!)
